The Czech Science Foundation (also known as the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic, GA CR) was established in 1993 as the main independent public organization with the aim to support basic research in the Czech Republic and promote international collaboration of researchers and research teams on the bilateral and multilateral levels. On the basis of calls for proposals, the Czech Science Foundation provides financial support for experienced as well as young and early-stage researchers. Moreover, it funds bilateral projects together with projects carried out within international research programmes. The subject of a project proposal is determined by the applicant (bottom-up principle). Around 2,500 project proposals are submitted to the GA CR every year, of which more than one-fourth obtain financial support. The GA CR invites proposals in all disciplines of basic research.

This will enable the design of effective spatial planning and land use management systems to deal with extreme weather events, (e.g. flooding, droughts) and other environmental stresses.

  • For founders
  • For endusers
  • For researchers
  • For citizens
Investing in research on land management to generate solutions to climate change challenges will contribute to improved climate resilience in natural, semi-natural, rural, and urban areas. Nature-based solutions will provide innovation and market opportunities.
The development of nature-based solutions and implementation of green infrastructure will enhance the delivery of ecosystem services to strengthen resilience to the expected increase in extreme weather events. It will reduce the dangers of droughts, floods, landslides and other hazards, improving both quality of life and business development opportunities.
Researchers will be challenged to bridge the global scale of climate change to local land management decisions and its relevance to stakeholders, e.g. in conflicts of urban densification versus green infrastructure benefits. Synergies of research and activities at different levels of urban policy may lead to explicit benefits and may enable cohesive solutions for environmental, social and economic challenges related to climate change.
Citizens will benefit from research that explores the relevance of land management for climate change challenges, since this will increase the options to successfully act towards these challenges, thus improving living conditions in rural and urban areas.

A comprehensive understanding is needed on how climate change may alter societal demand as well as the provision of natural capital of soil and land. This will enable the design of effective and suitable spatial planning and land use management systems, to deal with extreme weather events, flooding, droughts and environmental stresses.

Climate change affects all European countries. It is seen as a serious challenge for the urban areas as well as for rural areas on different scales. Climate changes all over Europe are increasing the danger of droughts, floods, landslides and other hazards, affecting both the quality of life of people and economy/businesses development. The comprehensive understanding about the processes resulting from climate change should be deepened, and better knowledge is needed for more effective and suitable land use management. Due to global aspects climate change should be regarded differently than the other societal challenges. The main focus should be on the protection of environment and the support of sustainability within the changing conditions as a result of climate change. Nevertheless, climate change is seen to be the number one threat as it is a very complex problem, therefore needing integrated, cross-sectoral solutions. Extreme weather events, flooding, drought and environmental stresses impose new demand on spatial planning and land management. Spatial planning is an instrument for coping with effects of climate change and land management can be a strong instrument supporting development and implementation of counteracting negative climate phenomena. There is awareness on climate change as a societal challenge, that’s why decision makers need to better integrate strategies for dealing with climate change into their development plans, rather than leaving them isolated as stand-alone policies and projects.
There is a need to work out land management instruments supporting climate change adaptation in the context of improving preparation for unexpected climate conditions in natural, semi-natural and built-up areas (rural and urban), through strengthening their resilience. Development of green infrastructure and nature-based solutions could enhance role of ecosystems services in the processes of strengthening this resilience.
